The PCP requested an urgent hearing in parliament by the Secretary of State for Fisheries on the construction of a reef complex in the sea off Comporta (Grândola) and also proposed listening to the mayors of the municipalities involved.
According to a request sent to Lusa, dated Tuesday, the PCP requested a hearing in the Assembly of the Republic of Teresa Coelho and the general director of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services, José Carlos Simão, on a request for the use of a sea route. off Comporta to create a reef complex.
The public consultation for this request ended on Tuesday and the project foresees the creation of a reef complex with 10,000 square meters facing the sea of Comporta, in the municipality of Grândola, which can extend up to 52 square kilometers.
The PCP understands that the creation of these extensive artificial reefs could endanger fishing in that region and that, according to the party, will affect innumerable families.
The party supports this concern with the number of boats registered in the nearest ports. At the end of 2021 there were 483 motor boats registered in the port of Sesimbra, 405 in Setúbal and 145 in Sines, 145, 266 and 83 motor boats in each of these ports and almost 1,000 people registered in multipurpose fishing.
These elements show the importance of fishing activity in this region, on which the employment and income of hundreds of fishermen and their families depend,” the communists argue.
The party also proposes that the mayors of the municipalities of Grândola, Sesimbra, Setúbal and Sines be heard about this pilot project, as well as the associations of fishing professionals in this region.
It is essential to ensure that activities as important as those of the primary sector are not put in danger, particularly fishing, whose impact will surely bring economic, social and cultural damage far greater than the possible benefits that a new activity can guarantee them. who are now candidates to exploit a public resource”, summarizes the communist caucus in the application.
