The president of the Liberal Initiative (IL) considered that “the SNS is sick and the name of the disease is the Socialist Party”, arguing that the only cure is a profound reform of the system that gets “socialist ideas out of the way”.
Speaking to the Lusa agency about a new poster that the party launched on Thursday at the Marquês de Pombal, in Lisbon, João Cotrim Figueiredo explained that IL’s goal is to “make people not forget” the “absolutely dire” state of public services, particularly in the health sector.
The SNS is sick. From our point of view, the name of the disease is the Socialist Party and the cure is a deep reform of the health system like the one advocated by IL,” he said.
In the opinion of the liberal leader, “the PS does not know how to manage public affairs and does not know how to make public services work.”
And in the specific case of health, it is the cause of the problem and, therefore, to cure this serious illness of the SNS, only the system is reformed and socialist ideas are got rid of”, he defended.
Asked about when the party will move forward with its proposal to reform the health system, João Cotrim Figueiredo stressed that the political calendar was adjusted due to the advancement of legislative elections, but guaranteed that the timing of this measure will be discussed during the party’s parliamentary days. . , which will take place on September 19 and 20.
Then we will know when we will present the comprehensive reform of the health system because there are other issues that may have priority, but we will discuss that at the headquarters of the parliamentary group,” he said.
Despite not forgetting the problems in the other public services, the IL deputy stressed that in the specific case of health, the country has lived “for three months with successive reports of very serious problems in the SNS”, being that “the one that What is most occupied by social communication are the emergency closures of gynecology and obstetrics”.
The Government believes that it is enough to throw money at the problem and take more or less puppet measures, such as the monitoring committee that all the hospital administrations tell me is useless and the additional information on emergencies opened on the SNS portal that not only it is useless as it seems harmful to me because only a few days ago we learned that there was a pregnant woman who went from Seixal to Santarém with the conviction that the obstetric emergency would be open. She did not go and ended up having her child in Caldas da Rainha”, she criticized.
In addition to the problems in emergencies, according to the liberal president “the most structural problems are still theresuch as “the endless waiting lists, the successive breaches of the magical response times, the dismissals everywhere of teams not only in the emergency room, but also in other specialties, and the apologies from doctors and nurses.”
