The British trade minister, Conor Burns, was fired this Friday by Liz Truss after a complaint of “serious misconduct”.
This is the first casualty in government for Liz Truss, who took office in September 2022. According to the Daily Telegraph, the Burns case took place in a hotel bar and quickly prompted action by the prime minister.
The Prime Minister took direct action upon being informed of this allegation and it is clear that all ministers must maintain high standards of behaviour, as the public expects,” Liz Truss’s office explained.
The former minister was also suspended from the Conservative Party parliamentary group, pending an investigation into his conduct. Burns will retain the parliamentary seat, but as an independent, having already assured that he “will fully cooperate with the investigation.”
According to Labor MP Chris Bryant, who chairs the parliamentary conduct committee, since the 2019 parliamentary election, 16 MPs have been suspended or resigned for various kinds of transgressions. “It is completely unheard of. It has never happened before in a legislature.”declared.
