The PS/Azores denounced this Monday the “lack of accommodation” for the teachers located in Corvo, the smallest island of the Azores, accusing the Executive of having the “offices in the Multipurpose Pavilion” as a “solution”.
In a press release, the PS/Corvo coordination secretary, Lubélio Mendonça, regrets that, a month after the start of classes, the solution of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) was “the purchase” of “ some furniture and house the teachers in the offices of the Multiple Use Pavilion”.
About a month after the start of the school year, the question of “The lack of accommodation remains unresolved, after the purchase of a property for this purpose was guaranteed last year”points out the Azorean socialist deputy, quoted in a statement.
The coordination secretary of PS/Corvo recalls that the regional secretary of Education announced “the purchase of a property, in which small requalification works would have to be carried out, and the rental of another, so that the problem would not be repeated in the future. ”.
According to the parliamentarian, the minister announced, at the time, that “the minor works would be finished by the end of October 2021”, so the property would be available “for the current academic year and for the following ones”but this statement was nothing more than “an attempt to deceive the teachers and also the Ravenclaws”.
“A year later, and when it was expected that the situation would be resolved, the problem worsened, since there is no property with small improvement works, nor rental of another, there is great incompetence and lack of ability to solve problems”, Lubélio Mendonça said.
According to the socialist leader, the first teacher “who was offered” the accommodation “solution” “in the pavilion’s offices immediately refused” and it was the “Executive Council that, with great effort, ended up solving the problem.”
Also according to the deputy, the remaining offices of the Multipurpose Pavilion, which “were not transformed into a hostel”, are being used as a nursery for appointment places, installing the Environment, Culture, Fishing, Sports, and Youth services there. Professional Qualification and Employment and, until recently, vice-presidency services”.
“This is a surreal situation that can only jeopardize the future of education on the island, because, knowing the current conditions, who will agree to teach on the island of Corvo?” questioned the socialist, asking the Regional Government for a solution . , “immediately”.
