Government highlights Manuel Coelho da Silva’s contribution to the fulfillment of RTP’s public mission

The Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, lamented today the death of the president of the Opinion Council of RTP, noting that “he left an important contribution to the fulfillment of the public mission” of the station.

Manuel Coelho da Silva, who has chaired the RTP Opinion Council since 2004, passed away this morning, at the age of 75. In a post shared on the official Twitter account of the Ministry of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva points out that Manuel Coelho da Silva, “defender of the public service of radio and television, made an important contribution to the fulfillment of the public mission of RTPin particular with regard to the promotion of the Portuguese language and culture, and in support of independent cinematographic and audiovisual production”.

Manuel Coelho da Silva, born in Soure, on January 22, 1947, had been re-elected president of the RTP Opinion Council on March 12 of last year, after leaving office to run for the presidency of the RTP Board of Directors .

Graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law of Coimbra, he had as a complementary training the Social Communication course organized by the University of the Azores. Lawyer, between 2002 and 2004 he was elected president of the RDP Opinion Council and was director of the Jorge Álvares Foundation since 2016.

Among the various positions he has held throughout his career are that of administrator of Tobis Portuguesa, between 2003 and 2006, the elected general secretary of the Association of Portuguese Language Universities (AULP), since its foundation, in 1986, until 2002, and the director of BCP – Bento Pedroso Construções, a Portuguese company belonging to the Brazilian group Odebrecht (1995-2000).
