UN Secretary-General António Guterres said Thursday that he was “determined” to reach a renewal of the agreement on Ukraine’s grain exports through the Black Sea, which has already reached a milestone of 10 million metric tons shipped.

In a press release at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres was asked how optimistic he was about renewing the deal, which involves Russia and Ukraine separately and expires on November 19, and responded with a quote by Jean Monnet: “I’m not optimistic, I’m not pessimistic, just determined”.

“And we must all be determined to do whatever it takes to ensure that we have the renewal of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and at the same time solve the problems that remain in the export of Russian food and fertilizers,” he said.

Moments earlier, Guterres had announced that he was bringing “hopeful news in a world shaken by turmoil”, indicating that ten million metric tons of grain have been shipped through the Black Sea corridor so far.
