Mohamed Abutrika, a former Egyptian football star, believes his compatriot Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s top scorer, has forfeited the Premier League Player of the Year award this season.

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne received the award days before his team became Premier League champions.

Abu Trika noted that “the best player award was stolen from Salah, with all due respect to de Bruyne, who has great talent, but the award should be given for performance throughout the season.”

He added: “De Bruyne starred in half or a quarter of the season, unlike Salah, who won two awards as the top scorer and also as the top scorer of the tournament, although he played 250 minutes less than his rival Son, and in this season he has been subjected to a lot of physical pressure in the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.”

He concluded: “Salah was the tournament’s top scorer for the third time, equaling Harry Kane and Alan Shearer, and his performance against Wolverhampton confirms his readiness for the Champions League final against Real Madrid.”
