Russian player Karen Khachanov commented on the decision of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to remove qualifying points for the Wimbledon British Championship, after blocking the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
“The ATP wants to show that there is no room for discrimination in their tournaments,” Khachanov told a press conference at the French Open, “Roland Garros.”
“I don’t want to get into the discussion whether I agree or not. The decision has already been made, ”the Russian added.
Last Friday, the ATP announced, in an official statement, to remove British Wimbledon ranking points, removing Russian and Belarusian athletes from participation in it, citing the decision of Wimbledon officials to denying the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes is “unfair”, and there is a possibility of major damage to the game for the first time in its history.
It is noteworthy that the organizers of Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, announced on April 20 that Russian and Belarusian tennis players would be disqualified from participating in the tournament scheduled between June 27 and July 10, justifying their decision regarding Russian. Karen Khachanov advanced to the second round of the French Open “Roland Garros” at the expense of Portuguese Nuno Borges, after beating her in three sets to one.
The Russian player, who ranked 24th in the tournament, had a second-round match with Bolivian Hugo Delin, who provided a big surprise when he defeated Austrian Dominic Thiem in three sets without a response.
