‘Totally disappointed’: Backlash from sponsors mounts after Dustin Johnson joins Saudi-backed golf tournament

One of the world’s biggest golf sponsors has expressed displeasure after Dustin Johnson announced his intention to participate in the Saidi-sponsored LIV Golf Invitational Series later this month.

One of Johnson’s biggest sponsors, RBC (Royal Bank of Canada), issued a statement expressing “extremely disappointed” with Johnson’s decision and suggested cutting ties with him immediately.

RBC is proud to be a partner of the PGA Tour. Our partnership is based on two world-class golf tournaments, the RBC Heritage and the RBC Canadian Open. If a golfer chooses to participate in a non-Tour event, including the LIV Golf Invitational Series, the PGA Tour has clarified their purpose under the Tournament Rules.

We recently learned that Dustin Johnson has decided to play in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series. The DJ has been a key member of the RBC team since 2018. While we are very disappointed with his decision, we wish him the best.

Johnson led the growing group of current and former PGA players who have chosen to compete in the Saudi-sponsored tournament.

“Apart from the Masters and US Open champion Johnson, 48 players are not considered surprises,” the press office said. New York Post. “They include Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Kevin Na, Lee Westwood, Louis Osthuisen, Martin Kaimer, Charl Schwarzel, Graham McDowell and Talor Gooch.”

As a former Masters champion and current world No. With 13 golfers, Johnson’s status in the sport will be a test of the PGA’s commitment to suspend or expel members from the Saudi-sponsored tournament as they promised.

However, despite threats from the PGA, Johnson believes the opportunity presented by a rival league is “too tempting to miss.”

“Dustin has been thinking about this for the past two years and has decided it’s in his and his family’s best interests,” said David Winkle, Johnson’s manager. “He didn’t have a problem with the PGA TOUR and was grateful for everything he gave him, but eventually decided that it was too overwhelming to turn it down.”

The LIV Golf Invitational will be held at Centurion Golf Club in London from 9-11 June.
