Toyota wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Portuguese triumphs in two categories

Toyota won this Sunday the 90th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most emblematic of the automotive endurance tests, in which the Portuguese António Félix da Costa (Oreca) and Henrique Chaves (Aston Martin) won in their categories.

The New Zealander Brendon Hartley, the Swiss Sébastien Buémi and the Japanese Ryo Hirakawa won this year’s edition, with an advantage of 2.01.222 minutes over their teammates, the Argentine José María López, the British Mike Conway and the Japanese Kamui Kobayashi, in the another Toyota hybrid.

The American Ryan Briscoe, the Frenchman Franck Mailleux and the British Richard Westbrook (Glinkenhouse) were third.

In LMP2, the second most important category, the victory went to the Portuguese António Félix da Costa, who teamed up with the British William Stevens and the Mexican Roberto González on the back of an Oreca — Gibson da Jota.

In this category, Filipe Albuquerque (Oreca) was hit right at the start of the race, falling to the back of the pack. As they were recovering and in the top 10, a tire hit the Oreca’s emergency button, turning it off mid-race, causing the Portuguese team to lose another two minutes, dropping to 10th in LMP2.

Henrique Chaves, in his debut in the French race, won the GTE AM category, with a TF Sport Aston Martin, driven together with the North American Ben Keating and the Danish Marco Sorensen.

Finally, in the GTE Pro category, the victory went to the Frenchman Fredéric Makowiecki, the Austrian Richard Lietz and the Italian Gianmaria Bruni, in a Porsche 911.
