Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher attacked Washington Commanders this weekend in response to their decision to fined defense coordinator Jack Del Rio $100,000 for expressing his views on Twitter.
Two weeks ago, Del Rio asked on Twitter why Congress was interested in holding hearings about the January 6 riots in the Capitol, but seemed uninterested in holding the session during the months of violent unrest led by the BLM since George Floyd. murder.
The following week, Del Rio tried to explain his tweet to reporters.
“I see images on TV that are destroying people’s livelihoods. Businesses are being burned,” Del Rio wrote in a deleted tweet. “It’s okay. And then there was a fight in the Capitol where nobody got burned. And we’re going to make it a big deal.”
The media reinforced Del Rio’s description of the January 6 riots as “torture” and launched a social media campaign against the coach, which later resulted in commanders publicly criticizing Del Rio in a lengthy statement and fined him $100,000.

The commanders said in a statement that Del Rio “has the right to speak his mind as a citizen of the United States, and that is absolutely his constitutional right.”
The explanation that made Maher say, “Don’t piss on my shoes and don’t tell me it’s raining.”

“He has the right to make mistakes,” Maher said. “You have the right to be wrong in America. They fined him, the team fined him $100,000 for his opinion. Punish people for their ideas. I do not agree.”
Maher’s opinion was previously considered an established fact. A person’s opinion may be completely wrong, but one still has the right to express it. The situation at Del Rio shows how dire our culture has turned: A man, in this case a coach, cannot express his personal opinion without being fined by his boss.
This is serious.
At first, Del Rio appeared to be punished for describing the 1/6 riot as “torture”. However, after reading the commanders’ statement, it turned out that he was punished for his opinion that he compared the 1/6 trial to the riots with Floyd. If not, why does the organization say it will “tolerant of any equality between the actions of those who demand justice after the assassination of George Floyd and those who tried to overthrow our government on January 6th”.
It is clear from the statement that they not only called the 1/6 rebellion “torture” but also punished Del Rio for his opinion.
Del Rio deleted his Twitter account after announcing the sentence.
