Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has revealed the reasons behind his failed move to Argentina’s River Plate after his contract with Atlético Madrid expired this summer.

“If I thought about it and was excited about the opportunity to join River Plate, I would feel the same way if he connected with Nacional, this is my home,” Suarez said.

He added: “I’m surprised that Nation officials didn’t even contact me to find out what my position is.”

He concluded: “I was excited about the idea of moving to River Plate and fighting for the Copa Libertadores title. I dreamed of winning this cup in South America, but River Plate left the competition, and therefore this possibility no longer exists. A month and a half ago I said I wouldn’t leave Europe but River Plate tried really hard with me until I started thinking about it and the opportunity came up to move in with him, the player wants love and Rivera Plate gave me that and Nacional had to try.”
