Dominic Thiem returns to ATP Tour triumphs 14 months later

Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem added this Tuesday first win in 14 months on the ATP circuit, defeating Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, in the first round of the tournament in Bastad, Sweden.

Winless since mid-May 2021 in the first round of the Rome Masters 1000, Thiem, former world number three and currently ranked 339, beat Ruusuvuori, 43, 3-6, 6-1 Y 7-6 (7-5)in two hours and 38 minutes.

Thiem injured his right wrist in the Mallorca tournament in mid-June last year and was long months away from the ‘courts’, successively postponing the return to competitionuntil finally returning to the Marbella ‘challenger’ at the end of March.

Since then, the Austrian lost in the first rounds in six tournamentsincluding the Estoril Open, and only had a victory in Salzburg, on the ‘challenger’ circuit.

Winner of 17 ATP titlesincluding the 2020 US Open and the 2019 Indian Wells Masters 1000, the 28-year-old Austrian was also two time finalist in Roland Garros (2018 and 2019) and in the ATP Finals (2019 and 2020), having also reached the Australian Open Final 2020.
