Cowboys star Tyrone Smith suffered a severely torn hamstring during a training session in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday. The injury is considered serious enough that the longtime player could be suspended from the field until December.
Smith may have surgery on Wednesday, although he still seeks a second opinion.
ESPN’s Todd Archer and Adam Schefter said, “Smith was injured during the game and fell to the ground trying to block defender Leighton Vander Ashe.” Said. “He was able to walk to the locker room unaided, and preliminary tests showed that the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee was intact.”
An eight-time professional bowler, Smith has one clear downside: he’s a great player to guard QB Dak Prescott’s blind side and is the longest-serving Cowboy on the team.
This injury, however, is the latest in a long streak that has kept Smith off the field all season since 2015. In other words, the Cowboys are accustomed to reshaping their teams to cover his loss.
However, developing this line may be more difficult this year. Lael Collins’ departure removes any opportunity for Dallas to shift their experience in the right-hand fight to the left. The Cowboys drafted Tyler Smith in the first round of this year’s draft, and he was the left team of the future. However, few believe that the newcomer is ready for this future to begin now.
The Tulsa product engages in a battle with incumbent Conner McGovern for left-back. A game that head coach Mike McCarthy said McGovern would win, based on the fact that the coach recently said that if the season starts today, McGovern will start on the left.
In addition to this, Tyler Smith is also battling an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last two workouts.
The relative lack of domestic options could force Dallas to sign the veteran before his first game against the Bucks on September 11. While Dwayne Brown recently signed with the Jets, the options for veterans aren’t all that great either.
Only 17 days left, whatever the Cowboys are doing, they better do it soon.
