The Government approved this Thursday in the Council of Ministers a total amount of 31.2 million euros for the Olympic and Paralympic preparation program for Paris 2024, praising a “historic increase” in financing.
The Resolution of the Council of Ministers determining the expenditure for the execution of the Olympic and Paralympic Preparation Program for the Olympic and Paralympic Games — Paris 2024, for an amount of 31.2 million euros from the Secretariat, was approved today. State of Youth and Sport.
The funds for the next Olympic cycle represent an increase of 18.4%, while in the Paralympic cycle the evolution is 32.9%, in both cases related to the Tokyo 2020 program.
For these Games, postponed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 18.55 million euros were approved for the Olympic Games -reinforced with four million euros for the postponement-, compared to 22 million this time, and in the Paralympic Games, the amount grows from 6.92 million, with an increase of 1.2 million euros, to 9.2 million.
Praising this increase as “historic”, the Government recalls that the increase in Paralympic preparation “will guarantee that for the first time there is an equivalence to the Olympic reality of all the conditions of scholarships and sports preparation” for both athletes and technical teams.
The funds for the Olympic and Paralympic programs include the amounts already planned for this year 2022, approved by Resolution of December 2021, which are now contemplated for the execution of Paris 2024, “adds the Government note.
The resolution approved this Thursday by the Council of Ministers “also aims to strengthen the Olympic and Paralympic Hope Programs with a view to participating in the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.”
The Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, with responsibility for Sports, Ana Catarina Mendes, had confirmed to Lusa, on Tuesday, a lump sum of 30 million euros, the “greatest reinforcement for Olympic preparation”.
The amounts applied in the last Games, in a total of approximately 30.6 million euros -in an atypical Olympic cycle and extended to five years-, have already corresponded to significant increases compared to Rio 2016, when 16 million were used in the Olympic preparation and 3, 8 in the Paralympics.
