A Madeiran athlete, about 70 years old, died this Saturday during the 6th edition of Ultra Madeira, in the municipality of Machico, reported a source from the firefighters and the Athletics Association of the region.
According to a source from the Machico Fire Department, the occurrence was recorded in the area of LamaceirosRibeira de Machico, and 12 members of the corporation were sent to the scene and the Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR) was called.
“When they arrived at the place, the man no longer presented vital signs,” said the same source.
THE The rescue operation had the collaboration of the Forest Police and “all-terrain vehicles were needed to reach the site due to the marsh.”
The management of the Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira has already issued a statement informing that “during the Ultra Madeira test, in the 30-meter test, an athlete was affected by a sudden illness and died, despite the efforts of the fire services and civil protection”.
Given this situation, the organization “decided to cancel the awards ceremony and the race scheduled for Sunday, October 2,” reads the same note.
Ultra Madeira is a sporting event that aims to connect one end of the island with the other, the program is made up of five events.
This 6th edition had 526 registered athletes.
