Eight rounds, one win, end of the line: Bruno Lage sacked by Wolverhampton

End of the line for Bruno Lage: the Portuguese coach was fired by Wolverhampton. After Sky Sports announced the news early this Sunday afternoon, the English club confirmed the coach’s departure after less than a year and a half.

The English club’s decision comes a day after the Wolves fell to West Ham, adding their second consecutive loss and the fourth in this edition of the Premier League. The team currently has six points from eight games played, being in the relegation zone and just above Nottingham Forest and Leicester.

“Bruno is an excellent coach, a dedicated and hard-working coach and a wise and honest man. It was a pleasure working with him and his coaching staff and it is with great sadness that we had to make a difficult decision. I have no doubts about Bruno’s abilities and I am sure he will be successful elsewhere. However, the team’s results and performances in recent months mean we have no choice but to act.” says Jeff Shi, president of Wolves, in the released statement.

Bruno Lage joined Wolverhampton in June last year to replace Nuno Espírito Santo, and led the team to a commendable 10th place finish in the Premier League. In the summer transfer market he lost Saïss, Dendoncker, Coady and Fábio Silva but received the vote of confidence from the club’s top management with more than 100 million euros in signings. — Gonçalo Guedes, Nathan Collins, Matheus Nunes, Diego Costa and Kalajdžić arrived, the latter was seriously injured in the opening match and was immediately excluded from the competition.

Wolves were winless in their first five Premier League games: they lost to Leeds (2-1), drew with Fulham (0-0), lost again to Tottenham (1-0) and then drew with Newcastle (1 -1) and Bournemouth (0-0). They got their first victory a month ago, at home and against Southampton (1-0), being then defeated by Manchester City (0-3) and West Ham (2-0), this Saturday.
