The Ethiopian Yalemzerf Yehualaw became the youngest winner in the history of the London Marathon this Sunday, at 23 years old, while in the men’s sector the victory went to the Kenyan Amos Kipruto.
The last time the historic road race was held in the fall – next year it will be held again in April -, Yalemzerf Yehualaw won with authorityin 2.17.26 hours, just three seconds shy of the personal best achieved this year in Hamburg in April.
The Ethiopian would even have achieved this personal record, were it not for a fall she suffered about 10 kilometers from the finish line, which delayed her a bit.
Leading from kilometer 15, joined by Judith Korir, Sutume Kebede, Alemu Megertu and reigning champion Joyciline Jepkosgei, Yehualaw sped to solo victory after kilometer 33.
Jepkosgei, the last to drop, finished 39 seconds after the winner, even better than the time she recorded in 2021, when she triumphed.
Amos Kipruto, 30, and in the best way in Londonwith a victory in 2:04.39 hours.
The second was the Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase (2:05.23) and the third the Belgian Bashir Abdi (2:05.19).
Kipruto already had triumphs in Rome (2016) and Seoul (2017 and 2019) and the bronze medal at the 2019 Doha World Cup, but he lacked a triumph in a ‘top’ marathon.
Ethiopia’s Sisay Lema, the reigning champion, led early but only finished seventh.
