Netflix releases anti-censorship section in corporate culture memo after employee protest

Streaming giant Netflix includes an anti-censorship section in its recently revised corporate culture memorandum that has been increasingly interpreted as a warning to the company’s active minority. This comes months after employees woke up on #NetflixWalkout to protest Dave Chappelle.

Netflix’s updated cultural memorandum features a new “Artistic Expression” section that explains that the streaming platform will not censor certain artists or voices that some employees may find “harmful”.

“If you have a hard time keeping up with the breadth of our content, Netflix may not be the best place for you,” the note told staff.

The note went on to say that the company will try to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes.

“Entertaining the world is a great opportunity and also a challenge because audiences have different tastes and perspectives,” he said in the post. “That’s why we offer a wide variety of TV shows and movies, some of which can be provocative. We offer ratings, content alerts and intuitive parental controls to help members make informed choices about what to watch.”

Noting that people do not agree with the content decisions, Netflix said that it will approach every title with the same principles.

“We support the artistic expressions of the authors we work with; we program for different audiences and tastes; and instead of censoring certain artists or voices from Netflix, we let viewers decide what suits them.”

“As employees, we support the principle that Netflix offers a variety of stories, even if we find that certain titles contradict our personal values. Depending on your role, you may need to create threads that you think are harmful. If you have a hard time keeping up with the breadth of our content, Netflix might not be the best place for you,” he said.

as said VariationThe “Artistic Expression” portion is interpreted as a response to Dave Chappelle’s “Intimacy” debate that dragged Netflix into conflict with what critics called transphobic and homophobic comments in a stand-up special last fall.”

Last October, Wake Netflix employees staged a protest outside their corporate office to protest the special comedy Chappelle.

In another episode, Netflix discussed the company’s financial problems after declaring a loss in the first quarter of last month and its stock closed more than 35 percent, with a loss of 2 million global subscribers expected in the second quarter alone. In the previous note, Netflix had no spending limits, but the new note deleted this section: “Almost no cost control and little control over signing contracts. Every employee is expected to get advice and insight when needed. “Use common sense” is our guiding principle.”

The new memorandum also cuts out this section on employee pay cuts: “Please note that we will not charge our employees lower wages if our company is struggling financially. A sports team with a losing track record still pays the most to players they hope to get them into a winning position. On the other hand, if the company is doing well, our widely held stock options become extremely valuable.
