New York State has reportedly sued Amazon, accusing the e-commerce giant of discriminating against pregnant women and disabled workers.
Business Insider reports that New York State has recently sued Amazon, alleging that the e-commerce giant discriminated against pregnant women and people with disabilities. The governor made a statement. Kathy Hochul (D) said the case was filed by the New York State Department of Human Rights.
The lawsuit alleges that Amazon’s policy forces pregnant women and disabled workers to take unpaid vacations by denying them reasonable accommodation, according to the statement. The lawsuit also alleges that Amazon allowed field managers to override the recommendations of designated “placement consultants”, forcing workers to resume work or take vacations in poor conditions.
The lawsuit includes certain cases where Amazon is believed to have violated workers’ rights. One such case involved a pregnant Amazon employee who was asked not to lift more than 25 pounds but was rejected by her manager and was injured as a result.
In another lawsuit, the lawsuit alleges that a disabled employee provided Amazon with documents proving they must adhere to a specific sleep schedule. An Amazon executive allegedly refused to change to change his shift despite valid medical records.
Vice, which had previously accused Amazon of mistreating pregnant workers, reported in July 2021 that a pregnant warehouse worker who requested a lighter duty was rejected. The worker also insisted that his manager repeatedly ask why it took him so long to rest in the bathroom.
Vice reported that the woman had a miscarriage and that Amazon was refusing her sick leave at the time.
