Russia invented a power generator for transplanted glucose-fed organs

Experts from the National Research Center have created a permanent energy source for pacemakers and other types of implants that can generate energy from blood glucose.

In a statement made by the press office of the center “Kurchatov Institute”, it was stated that the stimulators of the heart and nerve work on batteries that need to be replaced periodically, and it requires surgical intervention every time.

And to extend the life of these devices without unwanted processes, scientists have created an electric generator that continuously produces energy and does not need to be replaced.

“Specialists of the Department of Biotechnology and Bioenergy of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center have created a biofuel cell and a system that is ready to be implanted in the human body. The bioelectric generator is powered by electricity from the processing of blood glucose, ”the statement said.

This generator corresponds to the tissues of the body. The researchers also chose a safe way to insert the stent into the body through the bloodstream.

“Stent insertion has become common. Now to plant the generator, two thin holes need to be drilled, connected to other medical systems and powered, ”said Pavel Gutovtsov, vice president of the center’s biotechnology and bioenergy department.

Details of the study were published in the scientific journal Heliyon.
