Cardiologist Fausto Pinto is a candidate for president of the Portuguese Medical Association

The cardiologist and director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Fausto Pinto, presents this Thursday his candidacy for president of the Ordem dos Médicos (OM) in the elections scheduled for January 2023.

In a statement released this Monday, the director of the cardiology service of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte said that the goal of his candidacy is to create a “stronger, more independent, more rigorous and more excellent order”committing to “defend and represent” all doctors in the country.

Among the main measures, Fausto Pinto proposes a debureaucratized order that is closer to citizens, as well as the defense of an inclusive health system in its various components: public, private and social.

If elected president, the cardiologist it also aims to instill a greater impetus in the interaction between the OM and the universities and academies to “strengthen the intervention of the order in medical training, from undergraduate to postgraduate education.”

“In order to achieve greater equity in health, in its most varied aspects, including greater participation of young doctors, it proposes the creation of an Office of Young Doctors (internal and recent specialists), linked directly to the president, to give a greater response to the natural desires of the doctors of the future, guarantors of the well-being of our population,” the statement adds.

The participation of all doctors. It also contemplates the creation of a Support Office for Retired Doctorsdefends the cardiologist, a candidate for the position currently held by Miguel Guimarães, who is serving his second term.

Fausto Pinto is a specialist in cardiology and director of this service and of the heart and vessels department (since 2016) of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (CHULN).

He is also director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) and president of the World Heart Federation and the Cardiovascular Center of the University of Lisbon (CCUL).
