Russia is building a semiconductor lab in space

Russian scientists have built a test model of a system that synthesizes semiconductor structures aboard the International Space Station.

The model will undergo tests at the Raganov Institute for Semiconductor Physics. This was reported by the project’s chief designer, Alexander Nikiforov, head of the laboratory at the institute, who said that during tests on Earth, the model will dock with a model from the International Space Station.

He explained that multilayer semiconductor structures are created by placing layers of atoms of different chemical elements on a special platform, leading to the formation of multilayer nanostructures. This process must take place under absolute vacuum conditions so that foreign atoms do not dilute with a newly formed substance and affect its properties.

But the details for a complete vacuum on Earth are hard to come by, so they are easy to get into space. The scientists decided to set up a laboratory that makes semiconductors directly into Earth’s orbit.

Nikiforov said the final phase of testing on the system model will take place later this year or early next year, when the system will dock to a model from the International Space Station and then go live. space station and make sure it’s ready. .

It is noteworthy that the materials the system will produce in the open field can be used to make microelectronics and photonics, including light and laser detectors, as well as high-performance solar cells.
