Ford has ordered its dealers to temporarily suspend sales of its best-selling Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle due to a potential safety flaw that could move the vehicle. The issue affects approximately 49,000 of the 100,000 Mustang Mach-Es produced by Ford in Mexico and will likely result in recalls of vehicles already sold.
CNBC reports that Ford has ordered dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle due to a possible safety flaw that could cause the vehicle to stall. The Force on Monday sent a notice to dealers stating that the automaker has included the 2021 and 2022 Mach-E, manufactured between May 27, 2020, and May 24, 2022, in potentially affected vehicles, at the automaker’s Cuautitlán plant in Mexico.
A Ford spokesperson said about 49,000 of the approximately 100,000 Mach-Es produced at the time will be recalled. The problem is related to the potential overheating of the main contactors of high-voltage car batteries, electrical switches of the power circuit.
The problem may cause a malfunction that prevents the vehicle from starting or a sudden power cut while driving. The recall is the latest in a long line of electric vehicles, including Tesla vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, Ford has issued several recalls of the Mach-E since its launch.
The recall has ranged from a software bug that caused accidental acceleration, to issues with loose subframe bolts, and poor mounting for thousands of vehicles with mirrors. A Ford spokesperson said the company has filed a recall petition with NHTSA that addresses these issues.
Ford expects to find a solution to the latest issue in the third quarter, and Mustang Mach-E owners will be notified by mail when repair instructions and parts ordering information are available to dealers. A Ford spokesperson added that the fix will include a software update for the “Secondary Vehicle Diagnostic Vehicle Control Module and Battery Energy Management Module” and will be performed remotely.
