ZuckTok: Leaked memo reveals Facebook changed its algorithm to copy Chinese TikTok

According to a recently leaked memo, Facebook employees have been given a new directive to make the app’s feed more similar to China’s popular TikTok.

According to a leaked note, The Verge reported that Facebook employees were given a new directive to make the app more like TikTok. An internal memorandum from late April shows that Tom Alison, CEO of Facebook (now known as Meta), is laying out a plan for Facebook’s future.

Instead of prioritizing posts from accounts people follow, Facebook’s main news feed will begin recommending posts regardless of who made them or where they came from. The company also plans to reunite its Facebook and Messenger apps to emulate the TikTok messaging system a few years after they split.

With more focus on Reels-Facebook’s TikTok cloning feature built into Instagram, the changes show how Facebook is trying to challenge TikTok for social media dominance. Facebook has copied competitors in the past, especially as the app has grown in popularity, emulating many of Snapchat’s features.

Investors are reportedly starting to worry that Meta’s inability to deal with their advertising-related issues will be a big problem in the future. With Meta’s share price already falling, the company needs to keep up with the competition if CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to see his vision for the future of Metaverse come true.

In a comment below the April note, Alison told staff: “The danger to us is that we see it as useless for humans as a communication tool and a means of connecting with society and we may thrive.”

The Facebook app will see its main tab, which will be a combination of Stories and Reels at the top, below will be posts suggested by the app’s discovery engine from Facebook and Instagram. The app will be more video-rich than text-rich, with clearer prompts to message friends. Facebook also plans to place the user’s Messenger inbox in the upper-right corner of the app.
