İsmail Demir, Head of the Turkish Defense Industry Administration, announced that his country has begun developing small strike submarines.
“We have started the development process of the STM-500 diesel-electric small attack submarine, fully designed by Turkish engineers,” the official said in an interview on the Russian “TASS” website.
Describing this event as “historic”, Demir said the new submarine was designed to conduct reconnaissance and surveillance missions, and could participate in tactical and special military missions in shallow water and open seas.
According to available information, the STM-500 submarine will be equipped with the latest weapons and control systems and will be 42 meters long and will have a water displacement of 540 tons.
With a core crew of 18 people, this submarine is designed to carry 6 additional Special Forces soldiers and will have the latest sonar devices, 8 heavy torpedoes and 4 guided missiles.
