The second UN Conference on the Oceans adopted this Friday in Lisbon a political declaration on the defense of the oceans, in the closing plenary of the international meeting, chaired by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“I hear no objections, therefore, its adoption is decided”, said the Portuguese Head of State, addressing the plenary.
The consensual adoption of the text, entitled “Our ocean, our future, our responsibility” and which will be known as the “Lisbon Declaration”, concluded the five-day conference that brought together representatives from more than a hundred countries, including heads of state and government.
The statement assumes “collective failure” in the conservation of marine ecosystems and the need for “more ambition to fix the terrible state of the ocean.”
The text associates the degradation of the oceans with climate change, “one of the greatest challenges” of today, and the subscribers commit themselves again, despite the failures, to “urgent action” and “global cooperation”. , regional and sub-regional”. achieve all objectives as soon as possible and without undue delay”.
The Lisbon conference, co-organized by Portugal and Kenya, aimed to boost global efforts to preserve the oceans and followed the one in New York, in the United States, in 2017. The next one will be in France, in 2025.
