Lawson is responsible for reviewing high-profile information shared with the company by journalists, law enforcement and the government, and enforcing the platform’s content moderation guidelines. Lawson said in 2019 that Mark Zuckerberg’s company implemented a protocol that allows members of his team to access Facebook Messenger data even if the user deletes it.
Lawson’s lawsuit states: “Facebook has been telling users for years that if content is deleted by its users, it will not stay on any of Facebook’s servers and will be permanently deleted.”
The lawsuit also alleges that the protocol was used to access user data when law enforcement requested information about a suspect. “To keep Facebook in government goodwill, the escalation team will use an internal protocol to provide law enforcement responses and then determine how much data to provide,” the lawsuit said.
Lawson said he was targeted by management after questioning the legitimacy of the protocol at a meeting, and that the company used his grandmother’s hacked account to remove it.
