Dry. Tondela City Council suspends irrigation in “small public spaces”

The mayor of Tondela, Carla Antunes Borges, told the Lusa news agency this Friday that will put an end to the irrigation of small public spacesas a water-saving measure and as an example to the population.

“One of the most assertive ways of raising awareness among people, and with effects in reducing consumption, is to intervene in public spaces of municipal management, like the parks and the green areas of the avenues“, Carla Antunes Borges maintained.

Among the various measures adopted by the municipality, the president added that “the irrigation of all small areas will be closed, such as the dividers that are on the avenues, the landings next to some buildings, such as the library, for example, or in the accesses to IP3”, at roundabouts.

Irrigation will be maintained in the city’s Urban Park, “although in the space where the weekly fair takes place the water is closed, but in the leisure areas it is necessary to maintain some green and freshness, because they are leisure areas” citizens, he added.

“It is important to maintain social spaces, where people can walk with a certain freshness and, in this case, we do not cut off the water, but we will extend the time between irrigationsto make them more sustainable,” he explained.

There are “several measures” that the mayor has understood that “will promote the reduction and containment of water consumption, not only in a very clear and active way to promote this reduction, but also to be able to raise awareness of its importance.”

This is because, he explained, simultaneously with these measures, the Chamber initiates an awareness campaign among the population, associative movements and parish councils of the municipality, in the district of Viseu.

“We believe that, when public entities take the initiative, the populations also feel it as an obligation and, therefore, we are facilitators of positive and sustainable behavior,” he stressed.

Among the appeals that the municipality will make to citizens is the “reduction of consumption, the use of wastewater for irrigation, watering the plants in the hours of less heat, preferably at night, to avoid losses by evaporation.”

The municipality also makes a call to “reduce, or even avoid, car washes, avoid flushing the chain unnecessarily, use the dishwasher only when it is full, take quick showers and be aware of any water leaks”.

The water supply network in the municipality of Tondela it is done through the paul damas well as the municipalities of Carregal do Sal, Santa Comba Dão and Mortágua, also in the district of Viseu, and Tábua (district of Coimbra).

“This dam, at this moment, has a reserve capacity that reassures us, however, water is a good for everyone and we must save it, because it is not endless and, if we all continue to consume it, as if it would never end. , we can get to the point of rationalizing water, ”he warned.

Carla Antunes Borges said that these measures “result of several days of analysis in the municipality to understand what could be donetaking into account that the district of Viseu was classified by the APA [Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente] like extreme drought.
