The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the yellow warning for the central group of the Azores until 9:00 p.m. local time (one more hour in Lisbon), due to the rains, sometimes intense, that have been recorded.
The IPMA forecasts that the heavy rains in the central group, which includes the islands of Terceira, Faial, Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa, may be accompanied by electrical storms.
The yellow warning is the third most serious on the scale and means that there are risks for certain activities.
After bad weather, particularly in Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island, lightning struck a house in the Vila Nova parish, causing 11 injuries, four of them in serious condition, the Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores (SRPCBA).
Five of the injured were transferred to the Santo Espírito Hospital on Terceira Island, the most affected, and six to the Praia da Vitória Health Center, according to the same note.
