The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the yellow warning for the central group of the Azores until 12:00 local time (one more hour in Lisbon) this Monday, due to the rains, sometimes intense, that have registered.

The IPMA forecasts that heavy rains in the central group (Terceira, Faial, Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa Islands) may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

The yellow warning is the third most serious on the scale and means that there are risks for certain activities.

Meanwhile, from 00:00 to 14:00 local time, Civil Protection of the Azores recorded nine incidents on the islands of Terceira, Faial and Pico, as a result of bad weather in the region.

According to a statement from the Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores (SRPCBA), “most of the reported events are related to flooding of houses and roads and, on the island of Faial, lightning struck a house, causing damage. large and small dimensions. ”.

According to Civil Protection, “so far no personal damage has been recorded.”

The SRPCBA recalls that on Saturday night “several events were recorded, including flooding of roads, fire in a house and a multipurpose event with 11 injuries, of which seven were minor and four were serious.”

The seriously injured who were admitted to the Santo Espírito Hospital, on Terceira Island, after being struck by lightning, are stable and others have already been discharged, said the president of the hospital’s board.
