This week, the CEO of social media optimization service HyperSocial faced a huge backlash after posting a crying selfie after laying off several employees.
Vice News reports that the CEO of a LinkedIn post optimization company has come under fire after posting a crying selfie after firing several employees. Earlier this week, Braden Wallake posted a selfie on his LinkedIn profile and wrote:
This will be the most vulnerable thing I will share. In days like today, I want to be a business owner that only operates on money and doesn’t care who hurts in the process. But that is not me. So I just want people to see [sic] That not all CEOs are heartless and reckless when they have to fire people. I’m sure there are hundreds and thousands like me.
Wallake told Motherboard that he’s trying to show how hard it is for business owners when they’re forced to lay off their employees. Wallake’s post went viral and garnered more than 20,000 likes in less than a day, but sparked a controversy among LinkedIn users, with some applauding Wallake’s vulnerability and willingness to admit his mistakes.

But others described the post as “obscene and unpleasant” and criticized it for focusing on firing employees based on their own feelings and experiences. Wallak told Motherboard that the company laid off two of its employees on Tuesday night. He fired while firing another employee while watching “partner”.
A few hours later, Wallake decided to post on LinkedIn to show the emotional struggle management was facing. “I’m sitting here at my desk, probably crying, and I decided to post this because I’ve been seeing a lot lately on LinkedIn about how hard it is for business owners and CEOs to fire their employees and how hard it is. lay off employees until they get their third home in the Bahamas or elsewhere,” said Wallake.
“There are a lot of other business owners who are keeping people informed,” he continued. “And they make money not from their own income, but from the way their businesses run. And they may have done a lot, and I just want to show that it’s not just rich, profit-hungry businesses that are leaving, it’s normal people behind many layoffs.”
