The Saffir-Simpson scale is used to measure the intensity of a hurricane and ranges from 1 to 5, with 5 being the most intense.
In the statement, the meteorologist Carolina Medeiros, from the IPMA delegation of the Azores, said that at 3:00 p.m. local time this Friday (4:00 p.m. Lisbon time) the center of Hurricane Danielle was “1,425 kilometers to the west of the Azores, remaining roughly in the same geographic area,” and should, “early next week, move slowly northeast.”
With the data available so far, the IPMA states that “the hurricane should not cross the Azores archipelago”, however, it may influence “the climate from the beginning of next week, especially in the western group” ( Flores and Corvo), “with a 10 to 20% probability” of that happening.
“Taking into account the geographical and temporal distance to which the hurricane is located, there is uncertainty regarding its trajectory and respective intensity,” adds the IPMA.
