Hurricane Fiona has been upgraded to Category 4 as it moves away from the Turks and Caicos Islands towards the Bermuda archipelago, the US-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) revealed.
Fiona will approach Bermuda on Thursday,” the NHC said, adding that the hurricane, the first major one of the season, is accompanied by winds reaching 210 kilometers per hour.
The hurricane has already caused at least four deaths as it passes through the Caribbean region, after an 18-year-old girl was hit by a power pole in the Dominican Republic, according to the country’s authorities.
In the Turks and Caicos Islands, where Fiona passed as a Category 3 storm, Fiona’s winds reached a maximum of 185 kilometers per hour.
After gaining strength to Category 4 as it approaches Bermuda, Fiona is expected to weaken before reaching eastern Canada over the weekend.
The passage of the hurricane has caused flooding, felling of trees, landslides and power and water cuts to hundreds of thousands of people and has displaced at least 12,400 in the Dominican Republic.
