This year, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities released its first statewide annual report on Uber and Lyft activities. A column of data in the report’s spreadsheet counted the number of accidents involving the company’s drivers.

The 2021 report indicated that Uber and Lyft drivers were involved in 2,267 accidents in Massachusetts in 2021. Nearly half of these crashes, 1098, occurred in Boston.

Since 46 percent of all Uber or Lyft trips in Massachusetts last year were made within the city of Boston, this is roughly equivalent to the proportion of companies’ jobs in Boston compared to the rest of the state.

But the data also shows Uber and Lyft drivers are more likely to crash in Boston than anywhere else in Massachusetts. The MassDOT accident database recorded 124,577 accidents in the state in 2021. That means crashes involving Uber or Lyft drivers accounted for about two percent of total crashes in the state last year. That’s far from nearly a quarter within Boston city limits.

In a statement regarding the figures, the Boston Department of Transportation (BTD) said, “The City of Boston is making the streets safer for everyone. It starts with redesigning streets to reduce risk and prevent unsafe driver behavior. While many of our street design changes are designed to deliver broad safety benefits, effective sidewalk management is particularly important for the safe operation of multinationals (like Uber and Lyft) and other large economy companies operating on our streets.”
