Renault is not going through the best commercial moment and, in case of doubt, it is enough to see where its most popular models appear in the rankings of sales. The Zoe, which at the time led the market, disappeared from the top positions among trams, while the Clio, which for years was second in sales in Europe, just behind the undisputed Volkswagen Golf, also ceased to appear among the most sold. But everything indicates that it is only a long-term strategy launched by Luca de Meo, the new CEO who is already preparing the great commitment to a 100% electric future. which started with the Mégane E-Tech in 2022, but which promises to be reinforced soon with the R5 (2024), the R4 and the Scénic, both in 2025.

Renault’s approach, which as a group also includes Alpine, Dacia and Samsung Motors, to producing vehicles efficient and cost-effective electricinvolves providing them specific platforms for this type of technology, developed within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which allow optimizing the interior space in relation to the total length. At the same time, it aims to reduce weight and costs, even if this requires the complete adaptation of current factories, at considerable cost.
Renault secrets: the R5 will outperform Zoe and Clio
But Renault goes further and wants to put all the triumphs on its side, apparently adopting solutions similar to those of Tesla, which go through manufacturing its own motors and cells for the batteries, to control all the technologies it needs for its models to win at the competition. . The last example of the course determined by Luca de Meo is the commitment to 800V electrical systems (instead of the usual 400V)that potentially allow the batteries to be recharged at higher powers, without subjecting them to greater efforts, since the intensity of the current (measured in amps) remains the same and only the voltage (in volts) increases.

Committed to producing exclusively electric vehicles from 2030, five years before the limit imposed by the European Union, Renault is developing the 800V architecture in collaboration with Valeo. The French brand plans to launch this new technology in 2027, when electric models with larger dimensions and space for matching batteries begin to appear. This means that the R5, R4 and Scénic, as already happens with the Mégane E-Tech, continue to depend on the 400V architecture, that the 800V be reserved for larger batteries, probably even those installed in commercial vehicles, as they will also benefit from a shorter charge time.
