The Leiria City Council again recommended on Tuesday the eviction of 11 residents of a building, as a precautionary measure, due to the instability of a slope, which caused a landslide.
The residents had been displaced in the early hours of this Tuesday, after the displacement of a rocky mass, which reached the back of a building on the slope of the Leiria cemetery.
After a preliminary inspection by the municipality, the residents were allowed to return, but were prevented from accessing the rear of the building.
The Councilor for Civil Protection, Luís Lopes, told the Lusa agency today that technicians from the Chamber of Leiria continued to monitor the situation on the slope and an inspection was also requested from engineers from the Leiria Polytechnic, who collaborate with the municipality.
“Everyone agreed that the slope does not offer stability and more severe measures are necessary, as a precaution. Yesterday [sexta-feira] At the end of the day we notify the condominium and since then no one can stay in the building”, explained Luís Lopes.
According to the councilor, access to the building is conditioned. “People can just go looking for personal property or food. We prefer to opt for safety, since the fall of the slope is at stake. It may not happen, but it is better to be cautious ”, especially since“ there is a lot of construction pressure on that terrain ”, he stressed.
Luis Lopes said that he met today, together with councilor Ricardo Santos, the condominium and the contractor to explain the situation.
“A geotechnical study will be carried out and the owners will have to proceed with the stabilization of the slope”, revealed the councilor, recalling that the land is private.
The City Council could take charge of the work, but Luís Lopes insists: “our obligation is to notify. The land is property.”
The fall of the rocky block did not cause “any damage” to the building, said Luís Lopes at the time.
