In 2022, the Sapadores de Braga Firefighters carried out 328 rescue operations with lost, injured, sick or injured domestic animals on public roads, including dogs and cats, the municipality announced on Monday.
In a statement, the municipality adds that these efforts, which were carried out within the framework of the “Animal Relief” project, resulted in 5,510 kilometers traveled, with an average of 16.7 kilometers per service.
In total, 656 operators were dedicated to a total of 413 hours of effective work.
“This project constitutes an animal transport service, provided by the Municipality of Braga, through the Braga Sapadores Fire Brigade, carrying out the collection of stray, injured, sick or injured dogs and cats on public roads“, explains the statement.
The service can be requested, 24 hours a day and seven days a week, through the direct telephone number 253278488, of Bomberos Sapadores de Braga.
After the call, the occurrence is reported to the police authorities and the municipal veterinarian. Subsequently, the animals are sent for medical and veterinary care in the veterinary hospitals of the municipality.
The collection vehicle is prepared with specific transport boxes for dogs and cats, first aid consumables (specifically oxygen therapy) and a stretcher.
The project has been running since 2018.
