Scientists have developed a “plant nose” made of “artificial” cartilage!

British scientists are developing a ‘3D-printed botanical nose’ made from softwood pulp and an essential ingredient in face creams for people who have lost their noses due to accidents or cancer.

Currently, surgeons have to dig up victims’ ribs for the cartilage they use to build the superstructure of a patient’s nose.

It often involves multiple surgeries in which up to three lower ribs are removed.

Although its removal can cause long-term health problems, the cartilage that is removed is not ideal because it is less flexible and more fragile than the cartilage from which the nose was made.

That’s why experts at Swansea University have created ‘artificial’ cartilage that can be 3D printed to take the shape needed to fit the recipient’s face exactly.

Trainee surgeon Thomas Jovic, who created this mixture, said it consists of “nano-cellulose hydrogel” and “hyaluronic acid.”

Although this can be scary, Dr. Jovic said they are both naturally derived products.

“Nano-cellulose hydrogel is basically soft wood pulp. Hyaluronic acid, found in many skin creams and facial fillers, is made from bacteria. Both come from plants. A biostimulant was added to the mix to cure it after it was 3D printed. It is approximately 10 times more solid than normal nasal cartilage. an elastic material.

But this is not the final product. Then the chondrocytes are taken from the patient’s body, cloned in the laboratory and placed in a solution.

The artificial cartilage is then immersed in this cell solution. Over time, this skeletal structure colonizes and becomes stronger before it is surgically implanted. This technique can also be used to reconstruct damaged ears.
