Funchal Captaincy issues bad weather warnings for the Madeira coast

The Funchal port captaincy issued Monday notices of bad weather, strong wind and low visibility for the coast of the Madeira archipelago, recommending that shipowners take preventive measures to guarantee the safety of the vessels.

In a statement, the regional maritime authority mentions that the alert for the coast, issued by the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), is classified as sign 6which corresponds to winds that blow between 51 and 62 kilometers / hour, from any direction.

The notice is in effect until 6 am on Tuesday, indicates the captaincy.

The IPMA placed the southern coast and the mountainous areas of Madeira on red alert (the most serious) due to forecasts of “persistent heavy rain” for 24 hoursstarting at 3:00 p.m. this Monday, in a depression that bears the name of Óscar.

Regarding the general weather situation for the promenade, the Funchal captaincy adds that the wind will blow from “moderate to cool southeast, moving to the south quadrant, cool to very cool, sometimes strong, starting at the end of the morning.”

Regarding visibility, it indicates that it should be “good to moderate, gradually becoming weak to poor starting in the afternoon”.

The waves on the north coast will be from northwest to north of one meter, and up to 2.5 meters in the southern part.

“It is recommended that shipowners and owners adopt the due precautions to ensure their safety,” the document reads.
