Schools closed, flights cancelled. Civil Protection reported 23 incidents due to bad weather in Madeira

The Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service registered 23 incidents derived from the bad weather that affected the archipelago since Monday, the institution reported, noting that 24 means and 65 operational personnel were mobilized. This Tuesday, several sections of regional highways remain closed or conditioned and 28 flights to and from the island’s airport were cancelled.

According to the most recent balance, there were no serious incidents, only records of flooding, small landslides and falling trees at various points on the southern coast of Madeira, one of the most affected areas.

The municipalities of Machico and Santa Cruz, in Madeira, where on Monday there were some landslides due to bad weather, similar events occurred again overnight, but without seriousness, according to local firefighters.

The Lusa agency tried, unsuccessfully, to contact the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. to take stock of the possible effects during the night due to the bad weather red alert issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

Contacted by Lusa, a source from the Machico Municipal Fire Department and the Sapadores Santa Cruz Fire Company said that during the night there were small floods, landslides and tree falls, without seriousness.

The municipality of Machico, in the extreme east of Madeira, indicated on Monday that there had been several events related to small landslides that caused the partial closure of roads, the overflow of streams and light floods, but without registering serious situations.

In Santa Cruz, also in the eastern zone, the municipal civil protection service registered 19 events on Monday night, while the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, adjacent to Funchal to the west, reported a landslide in Fajã as the most significant fact. , in the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, which made the access road to the town impassable.

The southern coast and the mountainous regions of the island have been under red alert since 3:00 p.m. this Monday due to the forecast of intense and persistent rains due to the passage of depression Óscar.

The red alert, the most serious on a scale of three, was issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) and is in effect until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with the most critical period expected to occur between 06:00 hours. and 09:00.

The different municipal executives in the south of the island reinforced the means to act in case of need.

On the other hand, the public transport company Horas do Funchal issued a statement on Tuesday in which it admits “transport limitations” due to bad weather.

The Madeira Electric Power Company reported that all customer service counters will be closed, even at the headquarters, but the Customer Service will work normally through the respective telephone line.

Bad weather also conditioned the operation at the Madeira International Airport, with a record of 28 flights canceled and 12 diverted.

On the other hand, the Government of Madeira decided to suspend teaching activity in all schools and at all educational levels on the island of Madeira today, resuming normal activity on Wednesday (June 7).

The University of Madeira also determined the closure of all services.
