In the early hours of Sunday, accountant Husam Abdelgawi, 31, heard dogs barking. Still sleepy, he got up and went downstairs to see what was happening to the animals. As soon as he opened the door he felt water on his feet. It was a sign of the arrival of Storm Daniel, which hit the coastal city of Derna in Libya with torrential rains that caused two dams to break.
To date, the existence of 11,300 fatalities has been confirmed. Husam Abdelgawi, who lost 30 friends due to the floods, does not count towards this count, which he considers a “miracle.” He told the BBC that, on Sunday night, after water ripped away the front door of his house, he ran to the back, along with his younger brother, Ibrahim.
When they opened the back door, the brothers found a “horrible and unimaginable scene, worse than death itself”: “The bodies of women and children floated next to us. Cars and entire houses were trapped in the current. “Some of the bodies were dragged to our house by the water.”
