Marcelo calls for global change in the face of climate change on Refugee Day

The President of the Republic commemorates World Refugee Day this Thursday with a message calling for global change in the face of climate change, highlighting that there are millions of people displaced by its consequences.

This message from Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic this Thursday, World Refugee Day, which is celebrated on June 20 at the initiative of the United Nations (UN).

“On World Refugee Day we know that 120 million people were forced to leave their homes, their communities, their countries. A figure that grows annually, reflecting not only the impact of new global conflicts, but also of the crises that remain unresolved,” the text reads.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa affirms that in this year 2024 “the United Nations suggests special attention to The reality of refugees due to climate change.giving visibility to evidence that must be recognized in order to combat it effectively.”

“Only a change in global attitude towards climate change can protect the millions of citizens displaced around the world by its consequences,” argues the head of state.

Regarding Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa mentions that this June 20 “marks the anniversary of the climate agreement signed with Cape Verde, which converts the debt into an environmental fund for investments in the energy transition of that country.”

According to the President of the Republic, this “unprecedented agreement” that Portugal signed with Cape Verde “is also the affirmation of national commitment to sustainable development goals and with the humanistic attitude of hospitality and welcome to refugees.”
