Azores. PS warns that closing the Raminho road could put lives at risk

The PS/Açores warned this Wednesday that the closure of the road between Serreta and Raminho, in Terceira, could endanger the safety and lives of citizens, recalling that the island is facing a seismic crisis.

“It is a problem that has been going on since January and the main conclusion is that a solution has not yet been found. This is an essential path. for the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo and for the cohesion of the island of Terceira,” says regional deputy José Miguel Toste, in statements sent to the media by the party.

The socialist warns that the closure of the highway (a situation that has continued since January 14 due to landslides) not only affects the “island’s economy”, but also puts “citizen safety” at risk.

“We live in a seismic crisis. and the closure of this road could endanger the safety of the populations served by it. In an evacuation situation, the closure of this route could endanger the lives of these people, since the alternative route does not meet the necessary conditions for a safe evacuation,” he warns.

This Wednesday, the Government Council of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) approved the call for a public tender for the rehabilitation of the embankment of the Raminho regional road with a base value of four million euros.

For the PS/Açores deputy, it is “unacceptable” that the road remains closed almost six months after the landslides.

“It is ironic that, at a time when The region has the highest debt in history. and that debt records are being broken, and necessary and urgent investments like these remain to be made,” he stated.

According to the Secretary of the Treasury, in the presentation of the conclusions of the Government Council, the works on the Raminho road aim to “resolve the instability problems of that section of the regional road.”

Previously, on June 17, the government of the Azores had already announced the opening of a tender to restore traffic conditions on the Regional Highway 1-1, in Raminho, on the island of Terceira, the completion of which is expected 2026. .

The current seismic crisis has affected the island of Terceira since 2022.
