Eleven dead in Russian attacks in southern and eastern Ukraine

Governor Ivan Fedorov says that “the Russians attacked the city of Vilniansk in the Zaporizhia region” and killed “seven people, two of whom are children.”

Russian attacks on a city in the Zaporizhia region and villages in the Donetsk region in southern and eastern Ukraine left 11 dead on Saturday, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said.

“The Russians attacked the city of Vilniusk (…) in the Zaporizhia region, and the enemy killed seven people. Two of the dead are children,” Fedorov wrote on a social network, adding that 10 people were injured.

“Critical infrastructure, a store and residential buildings were damaged,” the same source added.

Vilniansk is 29 kilometers northeast of Zaporizhia, the main regional city, under Ukrainian control.

Russia claims to have annexed the Zaporizhia region, but although it occupies some areas, it does not control it completely.

Moscow has attacked Zaporizhia and neighboring cities several times since its offensive in Ukraine began in 2022, but in recent weeks it has focused its efforts mainly on the east of the country rather than the south.

Ukrainian authorities also announced that Russian attacks on frontline villages in the eastern Donetsk region left four dead.

“In Zarichne, the Russians killed three people,” Vadym Filachkin, the Ukrainian governor of the Donetsk region, said on social media.

Ukraine’s attorney general later announced that another person, a resident of the New York border village, “had also been fatally injured.”

New York has been under intense attack since mid-June as Russian forces advance towards the city of Toretsk.
