An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning (4:45 a.m.) about 12 kilometers east-southeast of Serpa, in the district of Beja, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere ( IPMA).
In a statement, the IPMA said that, to date, “no information has been received confirming that this earthquake was felt.”
The crash occurred around 4:45 a.m., the IPMA added.
According to the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), mild (4, 0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9) , exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (when it is greater than 10).
Also this morning, the IPMA recorded seismic activity on the island of Terceira, in the Azores, with three records at 6:41 a.m.: one of 3.4 (Richter) with an epicenter about 4 km east-southeast of Serreta (Terceira) ; another of 3.2 (Richter) with an epicenter approximately 4 km south-southeast of Raminho (Terceira) and another of 2.9 (Richter) approximately 6 km south-southwest of Altares (Terceira).
