The Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) revealed data relating to sales of electrified vehicles during the month of September in Portugal and The crisis that many point to electric vehicles simply did not occur. In the ninth month of the year, national consumers purchased 4,053 models powered exclusively by batteries in our country, a value 43.9% more compared to the 2,816 sold in the same period of the previous year. At a time when total vehicle sales in Portugal, regardless of the type of mechanics, grew by only 6.1%.
Hybrids without rechargeable batteries were the second type of electrified vehicle that sold the most in September, having sold 2,744 units, 44.5% more than the previous year. Behind them are plug-in hybrids (PHEV), which attracted 2,192 drivers, 10.7% less than in 2023, despite benefiting from essentially the same type of assistance as 100% electric vehicles among business customers. This growth in tram sales and the fall of PHEVs goes against what is happening at the European levelwhere plug-in hybrids (PHEV) benefit from the German market position, which removed incentives for electric vehicles, but not for PHEVs.
Car sales in Portugal increase 6.1% in September, but there are surprises
If we consider vehicle sales between January and September 2024, in which the total national market reached 181,479 units, having grown by just 4.6% compared to the same period in 2023, The 100% electric models sold 29,068 units, which corresponds to 13.3% more than last year. Hybrids registered an increase similar to that of electric vehicles, with the sale of 26,063 units and a growth of 13.6%, but the same did not happen with PHEVs, which sold 20,586 vehicles, corresponding to an increase of only 6 .3%.
