Maritime Authority warns of strong waves and asks for caution on the coast during the weekend

This Friday, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) recommended precautions in areas of the continent’s western coast due to worsening weather conditions and maritime disturbances. between Saturday and 6 pm on Sunday.

In a note, the AMN highlighted that the attention is intended for the population in general, but in particular for the maritime community, both when preparing to go to sea and when remaining at sea or in coastal areas.

The forecasts indicate a swell in the Northwest quadrant, “with a significant height that could reach five meters and a maximum height of nine meters, with an average period that varies between 11 and 12 seconds”, and winds from the Northwest, with average intensity of up to 47 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 85 km/h, he indicated.

The AMN recommended avoiding travel by sea or in areas exposed to maritime agitation, such as port protection piers, cliffs or beaches.

The authority also recommended reinforcing the mooring and close surveillance of moored vessels and anchored and that recreational fishing is not practiced, especially near cliffs and cliff areas frequently affected by breakers, “always taking into account that in these conditions the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas.”

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), on Saturday the coasts of the districts of Lisbon and Leiria will be under a yellow warning, the least serious on the IPMA scale, due to maritime unrest with northwesterly waves of 4 to 4.5 meters high.
