The environmental movement Climáximo called this Monday for a “massive demonstration and civil resistance action” next Saturday in Lisbon, called “Let’s stop while we can.”
In a statement, the movement asks society “stop the normalization of climate crisis violence caused by governments and companies“, remembering the recent floods in Valencia, Spain, as an example of the impact of climate change.
The goal of Saturday’s action is to create a “massive popular mobilization” to “dismantle the fossil industry and implement a transition plan based on social justice and respecting planetary boundaries,” activists say.
According to the spokesperson for the group, Inês Teles, the holding in Azerbaijan of a new edition of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP29) had no impact on Portuguese public opinion or on the Government’s action.
“The trivialization of the collapse is total, while governments and fossil companies have carte blanche to expand their arsenal of carbon bombs, perpetuating attacks in a war against humanity and the planet,” accuses Inês Teles, in a statement from the movement. .
COP29 has been marked by “empty discussions””, in the context of the election of a “climate denier” as president of the United States and the approval of the State Budget in Portugal that “treats the climate crisis as a footnote,” the activist further accuses.
Saturday’s demonstration, which begins at 3 p.m. in Paiva Couceiro Square, includes the holding of popular assemblies to discuss the issue, with the blockade of Chile Square planned to “break the catastrophic normality” in which the country lives. and “open space in society.” for the urgent discussion that does not take place in the centers of power,” say the activists.
The ultimate goal is to discuss “how to act together in the face of the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced,” the movement underlines, highlighting that climate, environmental and social issues “are not only interconnected,” but “are, in fact, the same, and affect all the people living in this historical moment.”
