Douglas Brinkley: Trump is a ‘show of rebellion’

Historian Douglas Brinkley told CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 on Tuesday that President Donald Trump was “a show of sedition.”

Discussing the testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, a former senior adviser to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Brinkley said, “Watergate is on everyone’s lips and in a way, Cassidy Hutchinson is John Dean today. That’s the only devastating testimony we’ve heard today. Donald Trump must be shaking in disbelief. He delivered all the goods. This hasn’t happened since the Civil War. I mean, if Watergate were smaller than that, we wouldn’t have a president, or even an American history with a pattern of rebellion. That’s where we see Trump today. There’s going to be plenty of plate breaking and ketchup scenes and I’m going to be the goddamn president. But the fact that President of the United States Anderson doesn’t care that there are armed rebels in the Capitol who say they can’t hurt me, i.e. Pence, Pelosi or members of Congress, leaves a consequence. They’re going to sue Donald Trump, So this is a story with feet.”

He added: “The problem is that it’s a riot and insurrection, and the president is giving the green light to bloodshed if it’s not essentially his, so no other president has acted with such a flaw in the way. A doubly indictable who attempted a coup in the United States.” He was president, and the January 6 investigation has been going on for a year. That’s great.”
